Device Onboarding

Quick Start

Get your first Device connected to /IOTCONNECT™ in minutes. This guide walks you through
platform setup, template creation, device registration, and sending your first telemetry data.

Quickly get Started

Register your company: Set up your /IOTCONNECT™ environment and get your unique CPID.

Create a Template: Define attributes, properties and commands for your device type.

Create a Device: Register your device with a unique ID and assign a template.

Send data: Use the simulator or SDK to send telemetry to /IOTCONNECT™.

View real-time data: Monitor telemetry, graphs, and tabular data from your device.

Prerequisites

  • An active /IOTCONNECT™ account
  • Access to the /IOTCONNECT™ portal
  • A physical device or use the built-in simulator

Steps to quickly get started

Step 1: Platform setup & company registration

Sign in to your /IOTCONNECT™ environment to access all platform features and modules. Your environment will include a company profile with a unique CPID (Company ID) that identifies your organization across the platform.

Your CPID is required when integrating devices using SDKs. Keep it handy for later steps.

Step 2: Create a Template

Templates are the blueprint for your devices. They consist of unique identifiers and allow you to define attributes, properties, and commands associated with the devices you want to connect.

Navigate to devices → Templates in the portal, click Create Template, provide a template name and code, define your device attributes (e.g., temperature, humidity, status), optionally add commands for cloud-to-device messaging, and save the template.

You can create a standard template using JSON format for faster setup. Learn more about templates in /IOTCONNECT™.

Step 3: Create a Device

Register your device by providing a unique ID to identify it, along with a display name. Select the template you created in the previous step to associate attributes and commands with this device.

Navigate to Devices → Device in the portal, click Create device, enter a unique device ID and display name, select your template from the dropdown, choose the entity the device belongs to, optionally add a description or notes, and save. The device is now active.

Note: You need to create an Entity before adding a device. Entities represent the organizational structure (e.g., locations, departments) within your /IOTCONNECT™ account.

Step 4: Send data to /IOTCONNECT™

There are two ways to send data to the platform:

Option A: Device Simulator

/IOTCONNECT™ provides a built-in simulator to verify connectivity and data flow without needing a physical device. Configure the simulator with: Interval (time in seconds between each data transmission), Duration (total time in minutes the simulation runs), Min (minimum value of an attribute), Max (maximum value of an attribute), and Precision (granularity of the data values sent).

The simulator option is available only when your device is registered and attributes are defined.

Option B: SDK Integration (actual device)

For production device connectivity, /IOTCONNECT™ provides SDKs for multiple programming languages to enable device-to-cloud and cloud-to-device communication.

Initialize the /IOTCONNECT™ SDK object with your CPID and device credentials, send telemetry data using the SDK’s publish methods, and implement callback functions to receive cloud-to-device messages.

Supported languages: Node.js, Python, Java, C, C#, iOS, Android.

Step 5: View real-time Data

Once connectivity is established, view real-time data from your device by clicking on the device’s unique ID in the device list. Navigate to the Live Data tab to access telemetry, graph, and tabular views.

Telemetry shows live attribute values as received from the device. Graph provides a visual time-series representation of device data. Tabular gives a structured table view with timestamps and attribute values.
