Entity

Entity

/IOTCONNECT™ Entities organize your IoT infrastructure into a hierarchical structure. /IOTCONNECT™ supports N-level nested entities allowing you to represent complex organizational structures like Company > Region > Building > Floor > Room.

Overview

Entities in /IOTCONNECT™ represent organizational units such as locations, departments, and facilities. They form the backbone of your IoT infrastructure hierarchy.

Every device must belong to an entity. The parent-child hierarchy enables access control — users assigned to a parent entity can see all child entities and their devices. /IOTCONNECT™ supports unlimited nesting depth, allowing you to model any organizational complexity. Entity owners can be assigned during creation to delegate management responsibilities.

Quick Start

Follow these steps to create an entity in /IOTCONNECT™:

Step 1: Navigate to Entity from the left menu.

Step 2: Click the + button to create a new entity.

Step 3: Enter the Entity Name.

Step 4: Select a Parent Entity from the dropdown (or leave empty to create a root-level entity).

Step 5: Enter Address, City, Country, and State information.

Step 6: Add a Description for the entity.

Step 7: Optionally check “Create Owner” and fill in owner details including First Name, Last Name, Email, Role, and Time Zone.

Step 8: Click Save to create the entity.

Entity Hierarchy

/IOTCONNECT™ supports N-level nested entity hierarchies, enabling you to model any organizational structure with unlimited depth. Each level represents a logical grouping within your IoT deployment.

Root Entity: The company-level entity at the top of the hierarchy. All other entities descend from root entities.

Child Entities: Departments, locations, or buildings that belong to a parent entity.

Nested Children: Floors, rooms, zones — unlimited nesting depth to represent any granularity.

Device Assignment: Devices belong to exactly one entity. Each device is associated with a single entity in the hierarchy.

User Access: Users see devices in their assigned entity and all children below, enabling cascading access control.

Entity Import

For large deployments, /IOTCONNECT™ supports bulk import of entities via CSV file. This allows you to quickly set up complex hierarchies without manually creating each entity individually.

Navigate to Entity > Entity Import to upload your CSV file and create multiple entities in a single operation.

ⓘ NOTE

Entities control data visibility. A user assigned to Entity A can only see devices and data within Entity A and its children. Plan your entity hierarchy carefully as it defines your access control boundaries.
