SNS Connector

SNS Connector

Route device events to Amazon SNS (Simple Notification Service) for fan-out notifications to multiple subscribers. Push alerts to email, SMS, HTTP endpoints, Lambda functions, and SQS queues simultaneously.

What is SNS

Amazon SNS is a fully managed pub/sub messaging service that decouples event producers from consumers. A single published message can be delivered to multiple endpoints in parallel — enabling fan-out patterns for IoT event notifications.

Key Features:

Fan-out Delivery: A single event published to an SNS topic can be delivered to multiple subscribers simultaneously.

Multiple Protocols: Deliver to email, SMS, HTTP/HTTPS, Lambda, SQS, mobile push, and Kinesis Firehose.

Message Filtering: Subscribers can set filter policies to receive only relevant events.

FIFO Topics: Strict ordering and deduplication for events that require sequential processing.

Dead-letter Queues: Failed deliveries are captured for retry and troubleshooting.

How it Works

When the SNS connector is enabled, /IOTCONNECT™ publishes device events to an SNS topic in your AWS account:

Device triggers event → Telemetry, fault, or diagnostic event is generated.

/IOTCONNECT™ publishes → The event message is published to your SNS topic with structured JSON payload.

SNS fans out → The message is delivered to all subscribed endpoints in parallel.

Subscribers process → Each subscriber (Lambda, SQS, email, etc.) receives and processes the event independently.

Watch the complete walkthrough video showing the end-to-end process of configuring the Amazon SNS connector and validating event notifications with the IoTConnect platform.

User Manual

Step 1: Navigate to Connector Settings

Go to Settings > Configuration > Live Data Streaming in the /IOTCONNECT™ portal.

Step 2: Enable SNS

Find the SNS connector card and toggle the switch to ON (green).

Step 3: Select Data Types

Choose which data types to publish: Telemetry, Faulty, Diagnostics, Command History.

Step 4: Run CloudFormation Stack

Click the CloudFormation link. This creates:

An SNS topic for /IOTCONNECT™ device events

Topic policy allowing cross-account publishing

IAM role with SNS:Publish permission

Step 5: Confirm Account ID

Account ID auto-populates after stack completion.

Step 6: Save

Click Save. Events start publishing to your SNS topic.

Step 7: Add Subscribers

In the AWS Console, add subscribers to the SNS topic: Lambda functions, SQS queues, email addresses, HTTP endpoints, or SMS numbers.

Use Cases

Alert Notifications: Send device fault alerts to operations teams via email and SMS simultaneously.

Event-driven Processing: Trigger Lambda functions for custom business logic on device events.

Multi-system Integration: Fan-out events to multiple downstream systems (CRM, ticketing, analytics).

Mobile Push Notifications: Push real-time device alerts to mobile applications.

Compliance Logging: Route all device events to both processing queues and audit storage simultaneously.

ⓘ NOTE

SNS delivers messages to all subscribers within seconds. Use message filtering to reduce noise at the subscriber level. Configure dead-letter queues to capture failed deliveries.
