DynamoDB Connector

DynamoDB Connector

Route device telemetry to Amazon DynamoDB for fast key-value storage with single-digit millisecond performance. Ideal for real-time device state tracking, time-series data, and high-throughput IoT workloads.

What is DynamoDB

Amazon DynamoDB is a fully managed NoSQL database service that delivers fast and predictable performance with seamless scalability. It supports both key-value and document data models, making it ideal for IoT telemetry storage.

Key Features:

Single-digit Millisecond Latency: Consistent read/write performance at any scale for real-time device queries.

Auto-scaling: Automatically adjusts throughput capacity based on traffic patterns without manual intervention.

TTL (Time-To-Live): Automatically expire old records after a configured period, keeping storage costs optimized.

Global Tables: Multi-region replication for globally distributed IoT deployments with low-latency reads.

Streams: Capture item-level changes for event-driven downstream processing.

How it Works

When the DynamoDB connector is enabled, /IOTCONNECT™ routes selected data types from your devices directly to a DynamoDB table in your AWS account:

Device sends telemetry → /IOTCONNECT™ ingests data via MQTT/HTTPS.

Rule engine processes → Data is validated, enriched with device metadata, and timestamped.

Connector routes → Selected data types (Telemetry, Faulty, Diagnostics, Command History) are written to your DynamoDB table.

Data lands in DynamoDB → Records are stored with partition key (deviceId) and sort key (timestamp) for efficient querying.

The data is written in real time with minimal latency. Each record includes the device ID, timestamp, template info, and the full telemetry payload.

Video Walkthrough: Amazon DynamoDB | Connector Configuration

Watch the complete walkthrough video showing the end-to-end process of configuring the Amazon DynamoDB connector and validating device data storage with the IoTConnect platform.

User Manual

Step 1: Navigate to Connector Settings

Go to Settings > Configuration > Live Data Streaming in the /IOTCONNECT™ portal.

Step 2: Enable DynamoDB

Find the DynamoDB connector card and toggle the switch to ON (green).

Step 3: Select Data Types

Choose which data to route:

Telemetry: Regular device sensor readings and measurements.

Faulty: Data flagged by validation rules as out-of-range or anomalous.

Diagnostics: Device health and connectivity diagnostics data.

Command History: Records of commands sent to devices and their responses.

Step 4: Run CloudFormation Stack

Click the CloudFormation link provided. This opens AWS Console and auto-creates:

A DynamoDB table with optimized partition/sort keys

An IAM cross-account role for secure access from /IOTCONNECT™

Required IAM policies with least-privilege permissions

Step 5: Confirm Account ID

After the CloudFormation stack completes, the Account ID field auto-populates in the portal.

Step 6: Save

Click Save. Data begins flowing to your DynamoDB table immediately.

Use Cases

Real-time Device State: Store the latest device state for instant lookups from mobile apps and dashboards.

Time-series Analytics: Query historical telemetry by device and time range for trend analysis.

Alert History: Maintain a searchable log of all device alerts and fault conditions.

Device Shadow: Keep a replicated device twin for offline-first applications.

Multi-region IoT: Use Global Tables for devices deployed across multiple geographic regions.

ⓘ NOTE

DynamoDB charges are based on read/write capacity units consumed. Use auto-scaling mode for variable IoT workloads. Enable TTL to automatically delete old records and control costs.
